This site is run by Josh Smith, a sole trader based in Buckinghamshire, UK. I take your privacy seriously and I keep things simple. Here is exactly what data I collect, why I collect it, and what happens to it.

Who I am

I am the data controller for personal information collected through this site. That means I decide how your data is used and I am responsible for keeping it safe.

What data I collect

Contact form

When you fill in the contact form, I collect your name, email address, company name (if you provide it), and the message you write. I use this to reply to you. That is it. I do not add you to any mailing list without asking first.

Book notification form

If you sign up to be notified about my book, I collect your email address. I will use it to let you know when the book is available or updated. I will not use it for anything else.

Analytics

If you accept analytics cookies, I use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people use the site. This tells me things like which pages are popular and how people find the site. Google Analytics does not tell me who you are. It collects anonymous usage data only.

You can decline analytics cookies when you first visit the site. If you change your mind, clear your browser cookies and the consent banner will reappear.

Why I collect it

  • Contact form data — to reply to your enquiry. The legal basis is legitimate interests (you contacted me expecting a reply).
  • Book notification email — to send you the notification you asked for. The legal basis is consent (you opted in).
  • Analytics data — to understand how people use the site so I can improve it. The legal basis is consent (you accepted analytics cookies).

How it is stored

I do not run a database. Here is where your data actually lives:

  • Contact and book notification emails — sent via Resend (resend.com), a transactional email service. Your message arrives in my email inbox. Resend processes data in the EU and US under standard contractual clauses.
  • Analytics data — stored by Google in accordance with their data retention settings. Google Analytics data is anonymised.
  • This website — hosted on Vercel (vercel.com). Vercel may log basic request data (IP addresses, timestamps) for security and performance purposes. See their privacy policy for details.

How long I keep it

Contact form messages sit in my inbox until I no longer need them, typically for as long as the conversation is relevant. I do not archive them indefinitely.

Book notification email addresses are kept until the notification has been sent or until you ask me to remove you.

Analytics data retention is set within Google Analytics. By default this is 14 months for user and event data.

I do not sell your data. I do not share it with advertisers. The only third parties involved are the services that run this site:

Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access — ask me what data I hold about you.
  • Correction — ask me to correct inaccurate data.
  • Deletion — ask me to delete your data.
  • Objection — object to how I am using your data.
  • Portability — ask for a copy of your data in a usable format.

If you are not happy with how I handle your data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). You can find them at ico.org.uk or call 0303 123 1113.

Changes to this policy

If I make any significant changes to how I handle your data, I will update this page. The date at the top of the page will always show when it was last updated.
